To avoid washing away the water repellency finish on technical shell garments you should pay attention what do you use for washing it. Same goes with woolen and synthetic first/mid-layers. Wrong washing chemicals gather into the fabric due time and for instance they wash away wools own wool fat. Also down gets weakened by wrong washing agents and looses it's insulating properties.
